Naples to Fort Myers Offshore Regatta

A sunny, warm and breezy morning welcomed 18 boats in the February 27, 2021 Naples to Ft. Myers Beach race.

The race, delayed until a 1050 start due to low tide constraints, began with a single mass broad reaching start off the Naples Pier. Winds were less than 10 knots from 165. Boats separated into their various courses but many such as “Pepper” headed to the east of the rhumb line on course 345.

A lightening breeze motivated a “hotter” angle of 355 around noon. Puffs of wind, likely from patchy clouds, helped matters along. Abruptly about 1300 the sea breeze kicked in with a near instantaneous change of wind direction to 265. Just in time, we were running out of water nearing the shore! We quickly changed into a tight reach, course 315, and headed directly for the finish. With an apparent favorable tide all the way north, we finished near channel mark 3.

The first boat to finish was “TriPolar” at 15:10:18. The rest of the fleet followed over the next 90 minutes.

Congratulations to the winners – spinnaker fleet – Dan Spence, “Vagabond”; non-spinnaker – John Finnegan (single hand), “Miss Cathleen”; and Cruising – Roger Horton, “Wicked”.

2021 Comodore's Cup

Eleven boats competed in the CMCS Commodores Cup held off of Fort Myers Beach February 6, 2021. PRO, Joe Periard, coordinated the regatta from the Bev and Bob Duff’s committee boat, Chase the Clouds. Cindy Naumann helped record the results. The regatta stared off with light easterly winds and a simple windward leeward race course. The second race involved two “hot dogs” in a clocking sub ten knot breeze. To accommodate the clocking breeze the PRO changed the course to a triangle with the “SC” as new windward mark. The wind built up to 16 knots during the fourth race of the day which consisted of a repeat of the triangle course for the spin and non-spin boats. The cruising fleet sailed a triangle windward leeward course in their final race.

Eric Milbrandt’s yacht, Full Tilt, dominated the winner’s column with four bullets in the Spinnaker fleet. Tom Horner’s boat, Eroica, won the Non-spin class while John Finnegan with his boat, Castaways, topped the winner’s column for the cruising class.

Summerset Regatta

To all Captains,

Thank you all for supporting Summerset. Based on the radio chatter I believe that everyone had a great time and the sailing competition was the right mix of fun and fierce.

Attached are the results.

First, the Lou Tilley Classic cruising race on Sunday was won by Gopher Baroque – Jason Pim and family. See attached for the rest of the results.

Next, thank you to all the racers that came from Tampa, Punta Gorda, Naples and Marco Island. It’s exciting to see the fleet out on the water on such a beautiful weekend. The drizzle on Sunday kept all the sunscreen in the lockers – perfect!

Obsession once again won the Spinnaker class, followed by Pendragon then T-bone
Non spin was won by Mae-B, followed by Eroica then Essence
And Cruising was won by Castaways, followed by Serendipity then No Name.

Special shout out to Castaways who absolutely crushed the pursuit race on Sunday (5 minutes ahead of the next boat) moving into first place. Their boat also won the loudest, the most cheering, and the best dancers. Nice Tri was racing for the first time and came close to winning the most cheering making an excellent effort on Saturday, but were outdone on Sunday when the committee could hear Castaways coming four minutes before crossing the finish line.

The pursuit race is amazing – The starts are staggered starting as early as 10:00 and as late as 11:48. Yet 12 of the 19 boats ended up finishing within 10 minutes of each other.

I want to thank all of you for your support and the fun times we have had. As I said on the race course, after four years as racing commodore I am stepping away. We are going to start a sailing adventure and take the boat north to the Erie Canal, the Trent Canal, and into Canada and Georgian Bay.
