Starting in Athens, we sailed to Israel, transited the Suez Canal, saw the Pyramids and the Sphinx, snorkeled in the Red Sea, were thrilled by seeing Petra* in Jordan and sailed within sight of Somalia and Yemen at the the entrance to the Indian Ocean at the Gulf of Aden.
This is our sixth cruise with Viking Lines (four river and two ocean cruises). They are either magicians or more probably great managers that really understand their business. They make it happen safely, comfortably and wonderfully. No, we are neither stockholders nor their travel agents.
Our only problems are trying to find time to read the books we brought with us and having the will power to resist just some of the endless presentations of gourmet delights.
From Oman, we will sail to India and then southeast Asia.
We will fly to New York for October and return to Naples by November 1st.
We miss our friends and family. Hope everyone is well.
Looking forward to seeing you soon.
Lorelei and Bob
*Note: Petra is a real lost city in Jordan. Probably first settled several thousand years BCE. It was known to the classical Greeks and Romans and then rediscovered by the western world in the nineteenth century. The city was featured in the film “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” with Harrison Ford and Sean Connery.
Petra is reached by a long winding path about 20 feet wide through a canyon with vertical rock walls rising hundreds of feet. At the end of this shadow filled barren passage, the scene below almost explodes with bright sunlight. A genuine WOW moment!! How could someone not locate a movie here?
