It has been a few days since my last update. Paula and I have been gunkholing in several remote anchorages in the vicinity of Oriental, NC. For non-sailors – gunkholing means we simply anchored out in some remote little spot with no facilities. At some places we could barely get 3G Internet, some with no Internet at all. Funny – your level of Internet service seems to indicate whether you’re in a remote area these days. This area is very beautiful with tall pine trees along the shore. Reminds me of areas up around the Great Lakes.
Yesterday we headed into Bridgeton, NC, which is right across the river from New Bern. New Bern’s claim to fame is that Pepsi Cola was first made here, and that it was once the North Carolina state capital. Bridgeton, on the other hand, does not seem to have anything interesting about it. The reason we’re here is that we will be taking several weeks off from our cruise to do a little needed boat work. Plus, we will be driving to Columbia. MO to see our 2-year old grand-daughter – and our daughter too.
Something interesting in our marina is that several of the “live aboards” – people that live full time on their boats at this marina – have planted small gardens.
