Not too memorable day today. Still a little windy and drizzly this morning. We went two miles this afternoon to the Oriental free dock which is right in the middle of town. Did a little walking around, shopping, and stopped for a beer at the Tiki Bar. Oriental is very dog friendly, so Annie gets to go everywhere. She’s getting spoiled.
The winds were 15 to 20 knots today. Andrea just doesn’t want to go away. We’re getting tired of her. Guess we really can’t complain too much. We’ve experienced fantastic weather for practically our whole trip, until now.
If you had not noticed, Oriental is a rather unusual name for a town. Back in 1886, the place was known as Smith’s Creek. The first postmaster’s wife saw the nameplate of a wreck called the “Oriental”, and got the town renamed because she liked the name. Now Oriental is known as the sailing capital of North Carolina. Isn’t history fascinating?
Oh yes – I should mention that the town has a web can of the free dock ( towndock.net/harborcam ). If you take a look, you should see Freestyle!
