We had a great event for the third 2019 – 2020 Boat of the Year Event. The first race of the season is always Summerset, but then there was a race down in Naples in late October and then we (CMCS) host the Festival of the Islands. By the way – for anyone interested – the next race is Dec 7th and is a distance race starting in Fort Myers and racing down the coast to Naples. The Gulf Cost Sailing Club will be putting on a GREAT event including breakfast at the prestigious Naples Sailing & Yacht Club. If you are even thinking about getting out in the boat, this is it, this is the one. Go sign up on SWFLSAIL.com!
For the Festival of the Islands Regatta we had 13 boats registered. The weather was perfect! At least for people who like a brisk wind and challenging sailing. We saw steady winds of eighteen with a few gusts well into the twenties. We had a couple of boats who for various reasons did not make it to the start line. One excuse was the skipper had a hockey injury! Another claimed their boat would not start.
And then we had two boats that retired during the race. In the words of one team, “we had bits of broken boat flying all over the place”. But there was one team that lost their head sail clew and managed to lower the sail and fix it – WHILE ROUNDING THE MARK. The estimates were they might have lost 30 seconds. A comment about this, its really good to be able to get out on a day like this regatta and test the boat and the crew, to challenge ourselves, to feel alive.
So how do I know this was the feeling amongst the competitors? Because we had all of the boats, skippers and crew, back to Salty Sam’s for the results celebration. What a great party with 50 sailors gathered to re-live the moments, to laugh, to boast, to be recognized. There were at least 30 conversations going on at any giving moment! Thank you all for coming.
And so for the results. Attached are the details for both races with elapsed and corrected times. And here are the highlights.
